Castles

Most girls, as they are growing up, dream of being swept off their feet by a charming prince. Of living "happily ever after" as "queen" of her castle. Of thoughts of life so long ago. Well, even when you grow up, no matter who you may have become some of that fantasy still subtly lingers with many of us. Perhaps each of us, in our own way, are trying to savor some of those reminders of our childhood fantasies. So we've decided to devote this page strictly to Castles. Personally now when I see a picture of a Castle I think of Camelot (one of my favorite movies) and also of Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty and Snow White. A bit of my "yesteryears" and a bit of my "today".

We will try and update this page as frequently as possible with a few "Castles of the Day" tours and any other information we can locate. Just click on the pictures and check it out.

The Banff Springs Hotel is a world-renowned symbol of Canadian hospitality. The four floor wooden structure opened in early summer 1888 and was christened with the name in reference to the nearby hot springs. The Banff Springs Hotel was finished as it appears today in 1928. The furniture was made by the Montreal company of Castle and Son Manufacturing and the pieces are exact replicas of original period pieces from European castles and manor houses. The Banff Spring Hotel is now an Historical Site.

The Weobley Castle a fortified manor house is a rarity in Wales, and is one of the finest examples of its type. It is the only stone castle on the northern side of the Gower Peninsula. Superficially, the castle seems to have been built with a randomness that reflects how flimsy its defenses really were. Clearly, the castle's builders were more concerned with personal conveniences than defensive might. Indeed, the only battle of consequence involving Weobley Castle was conducted by Owain Glyndwr in 1403. Glyndwr's assault essentially destroyed the castle, but it was promptly rebuilt and maintained for several centuries.

Dunguaire Castle was built in 1520 by the Hynes Clan, their association with the site itself goes back to 662 AD when Guaire, King of Connaught, an early ancestor of the clan, ruled the kingdom from an earthwork Rath .
